Nine out of ten Cincinnati Plumbing service calls we perform that have to do with a FOOD WASTE DISPOSER are due to the fact that a customer has miss used their disposal!
We always try and educate the customer on What not to put in your DISPOSAL!.
As a rule of thumb do not put anything in a disposal that you can possibly throw into a waste can!
Below is a short list of some of the most common things that we find in disposals, that shouldn’t even be there at all.
- Citrus Rinds of any kind. ( even though they smell good )
- Nuts such as almonds or pistachios.
- Large particles or pieces of food.
- Pastas such as egg noodles, spaghetti.
- Egg shells.
- Any sort of meat, chicken or fish in large pieces.
- Lunch Meat.
- Left over grease from frying foods.
- Utensils. (A no-brainer)
- Coffee grounds.
- Candy or large amounts of sugar.
All these things have probably went down your disposal at one time or another inadvertently and maybe didn’t cause a clog or stop it from functioning at all. Lucky You! If you want to keep the plumber away then clean your plate off over the waste can before washing off those little bits left behind on the plate in the disposal and you will be much better off. Due to even small amounts of grease laden foods over a period of time any kitchen plumbing can and will become slow or clogged. To promote the longevity of your kitchen waste piping try to remove as much grease from pots, pans and plates as possible before putting them in the sink or disposal!
